Walter Peter Joseph McCarthyWilliam P.J. McCarthy is the founder, President, and owner of the company that bears his name. Mr. McCarthy began working in the real estate industry in 1978 immediately upon graduating from high school, working with his grandfather and mentor, John Jambor, as a landscaper, janitor, trouble shooter and in other hands on capacities while he attended university and real estate programs simultaneously. He retains a hands on approach to all of his business operations.

He is a graduate of Douglas College, the British Columbia Institute of Technology, Simon Fraser University, and the University of British Columbia. Mr. McCarthy currently  holds seven professional designations. His commitment to ongoing professional development and education is well known and established. He served as the 55th President of the Real Estate Institute of Canada, and is a longstanding member of their faculty. He is the author of three of their textbooks on business ethics, commercial leasing, and real estate negotiation and documentation. Mr. McCarthy also writes and lectures on various real estate matters, and is a longstanding newspaper columnist and scholar.

Mr. McCarthy strongly believes in being involved in, and giving back to one’s community and profession. He has served on over one hundred boards, committees and organizations involved in community, professional and educational activities. He and his firm are noted philanthropists.

William McCarthy has been actively involved, and remains so, in several organizations committed to and supportive of the real estate and education professions, community and sports organizations, health care and cancer research and education programs, and religious organizations. He has completed numerous pro bono consulting assignments for these causes and continues to advise several organizations on business, real estate and operational matters and strategic planning.

Mr. McCarthy is the former Chairperson of the Burnaby Hospital Foundation and also led the most successful capital campaign in its history. Mr. McCarthy has served as a Director and Officer of the Real Estate Institute of Canada, this country‘s premier organization dedicated to real estate education and professional development. In 2009-10 Mr. McCarthy served as the Institute‘s 55th President. Mr. McCarthy served as a Director and Officer and President of the Institute of Real Estate Management‘s British Columbia Chapter. Mr. McCarthy currently serves as a Director of the Institute of Real Estate Management‘s International Board of Directors, its Foundation, and its Ethics Committee.

Mr. McCarthy is also actively involved in the Counselors of Real Estate, of which he is one of approximately 1,100 designees worldwide. Mr. McCarthy is the current Chairperson of the Counselors of Real Estate Ethics Committee, and is a member of the Editorial Board of their Real Estate Issues journal.

Mr. McCarthy actively serves on several professional Committees and Boards focused on real estate education, scholarship, academics, and professional standards and ethics. Mr. McCarthy is a member of the Real Estate Institute of Canada‘s real estate faculty. He regularly teaches real estate and business ethics and the leasing of commercial property across the country. He is a frequent participant in seminars and presentations on various real estate and business matters. He actively pursues real estate scholarship and academic research on related topics. Mr. McCarthy is the author of three real estate textbooks for the Real Estate Institute of Canada. REIC 2600 Ethics and Business Practice; REIC 2630 The Leasing Process; REIC 2631 Negotiation and Documentation in Commercial Leasing.

He has been the real estate columnist for the Burnaby Now newspaper since 1994.

Mr. McCarthy is the two time recipient of the Morguard Literary Award for the best real estate article written that year in Canada. He is also the recipient of the Patrick J. Harvey Memorial Award presented by the Real Estate Institute of Canada to an individual who has significantly contributed to real estate education in Canada. The Real Estate Institute of Canada recognized and honoured Mr. McCarthy’s contribution and that of his company to the real estate profession in Canada by naming its corporate citizen award the W.P.J. McCarthy and Company Ltd. Corporate Citizen of the Year Award.

Mr. McCarthy is also an avid Master Gardener and garden designer, rosarian, and beekeeper who frequently lectures and teaches on all of these fields. He is a Commissioned Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces.  He is married to Dolores and they have three children.
